Ugh, I know, another Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. For many years, I had resisted making a Pinot Noir. Not because I don’t like Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, there are a few examples that I enjoy, it was more about not thinking there was anything new to say. I have always said that if I got a chance to source Pinot Noir from Coury’s original vineyard, I would make an exception. That hasn’t happened yet, but I have faith. Instead, something equally compelling was offered to me, and I couldn’t say no.

In My Time of Darkness

There is something about this hill. I tell people all of the time that the wines made from these Loess soils on David Hill (aka Wine Hill) are so different than most of the rest of the valley. I know, EVERYONE SAYS THIS ABOUT THEIR VINEYARD. Pour this wine against most Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs and you will see what I mean. This is 100% non-Dijon clone Pinot Noir from the extraordiary Wind Earth Vineyard. This vineyard was planted to more than a few new Pinot Noir clones in this area. Early results are stunning. This is the Pinot Noir for Syrah lovers. The depth. The darkness. Haunting wine. Damn you, Pinot!
